10 Rules for Startup Leaders

I’ve got a new group of managers reporting to me today, and it made me think explicitly through what I value and expect:

  1. lead by example
  2. push decisions down whenever possible
  3. be inside the team circle, not outside of it
  4. face the hard decisions, and don’t dither doing so
  5. lift the team with positive energy, but keep it real
  6. be highly allergic to dogmatism
  7. set a really high bar, but don’t burn people out
  8. constantly give feedback, whether good or bad
  9. challenge people with growth opportunities and just enough support
  10. control the narrative (externalize thoughts and work to your team and your company)
