    Could not help but make some observations on the survey, for what they are worth:n1. the 4% is an anchor – since we don’t know how much we spend or what 4% of our spend means, this will end up making us pick answers that we think are correct.n2. big and moderate most likely mean different things to different people. Moreover, it may lead to confusion whether the degree refers to amount of spend or number of purchase occasions.n3. I would not have used the 2 opened ended questions (3) and (4) – the method I recommend is to conduct a few interviews (or focus group), collect a few statements and ask your respondents to agree/disagree (on a 5/7 point scale). The answers would help with factor analysis and for classifying customers into segments.nnRegardsn-rags

    Thanks Rags. Good point about the 4% being an unnecessary influencer. I might have written it too fast. I wanted to keep the other sections open ended because I’m curious to hear what people say and come with, rather than lead them on or put conclusions in their heads.

    I’ll be at the end of the spectrum that makes you think everything will be bought online within a few years, but I’m not your typical consumer. I’ve used the Web for years to target what I want, do research, and make an informed purchase.nn4%? Really? I hadn’t checked that number in a while. I remember working for dot-coms in the late ’90s with Powerpoints promising that 50% of all shopping would be done online!

    Giff – it is not influencing opinions when you give 20 odd statements there as long as these came from initial interaction with a few (~6-10) people from your target market. Of course we should re-phrase some of the quotes to retain the intent but not overly bias the respondent. n i recommend a follow-up survey using the inputs you receive in the free-form text. nAgain it depends on what you plan to do with the data.n-rags
