there may be more creative ideas out there in the lean startup world, but my thinking is this: until you have your site up and open to the public, so you're stuck having conversations around need, behavior, and review of mockups, I go the degrees-of-separation route. Try to get people who know you to introduce you to someone who doesn't. When you talk to someone, try to get them to introduce you to someone else.

Hi there Giff - I totally agree that conversations are the way to go. What have you found to be a good way to get customers to engage with you and take the time for a conversation / phone call in the first place?

Hope your startup is going well Kevin!

Surveys were useful to me at the very beginning, but not right now while we work on getting MVP done. Right now I need to read people. I think surveys will become useful again, in addition to one-on-ones, once we have a broader pool of people actually using the product. But what I really can't wait to do is sit someone down in front of the product with no explanation and watch them thrive or struggle.

Agree with everything you are saying and discovering, Giff and I'm pursuing similar tactics. Surveys are great, but so far nothing has beaten conversations.
